In a heart-wrenching statement, families of patients at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) in Glasgow have spoken out against what they describe as a systemic failure of honesty and accountability. They’ve called for past and present leaders to be held accountable, even suggesting pensions earned during their tenure at the hospital should be stripped. “The QEUH is not a safe hospital,” they assert. “The current leadership cannot be trusted to fix it.”
The families also paid tribute to the “brave and decent clinicians and staff” who tried to raise alarms but were silenced by the health board. “We will never forget that they stood with us,” they added.
In response, NHSGGC highlighted the steps taken to address physical defects and implement ongoing maintenance and monitoring. They emphasized their staff’s commitment to providing safe, high-quality care. Yet, the damage to trust seems irreparable.
The Scottish Hospitals Inquiry, which has been examining the planning, design, and maintenance of hospitals, is set to publish its report later this year. The inquiry was prompted by a series of infections and deaths, including the tragic case of 10-year-old Milly Main, whose death is now part of a corporate homicide investigation.
