FCT Police Debunk Assassination Attempt on Navy Officer: Debunking Rumors and Media Reports (2025)

No Assassination Attempt on Naval Officer in Face-Off with Wike — Police Clarify

The Truth Behind the Rumors

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has addressed recent rumors and social media posts suggesting that a Nigerian Navy officer, Lt. Ahmed Yerima, survived an assassination attempt in Abuja. They have categorically denied these claims, labeling them as false and unverified.

The initial reports described a high-speed chase involving unidentified men in black, traveling in unmarked Hilux vans without number plates. The pursuit allegedly began at the NIPCO filling station on the Kubwa Expressway and continued to Gado Nasco Way, with Yerima evading the assailants through a strategic maneuver.

These claims sparked speculation, linking the incident to Yerima's recent confrontation with FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, over a disputed land allocation in Abuja. However, the police command's spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, stated that no such incident was reported or recorded within the FCT.

The Real Story: A Misunderstanding?

The police statement emphasizes that the public should disregard the false information and refrain from spreading unverified claims that could cause unnecessary panic. This clarification comes after PUNCH Online reported a clash between Yerima and Wike on November 11 over a disputed plot in the Gaduwa District, belonging to a former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Zubairu Gambo (retd).

Viral videos showed Yerima, on security detail, blocking Wike's team from accessing the site. The minister accused the retired military chief of illegal development and confronted Yerima for allegedly assaulting personnel of the Federal Capital Development Authority. The minister's heated language, including calling Yerima a "fool," sparked a public debate on the rightness of the minister's actions.

While some argued that Wike was upholding his constitutional duty, military veterans supported Yerima, rejecting calls for his discipline and demanding an apology from Wike. Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar, further assured that no lawful military personnel would face sanctions.

A Lesson in Media Literacy

This incident highlights the importance of media literacy and critical thinking. The police command's swift denial serves as a reminder that not all social media posts and reports are reliable. It is crucial to verify information from credible sources to avoid spreading misinformation and unnecessary panic.
