Facing a surge of flu cases, hospitals across the country are taking decisive action to protect patients and staff. The core of the issue? Limiting visitors to just one per patient.
Recent reports reveal a significant increase in influenza cases. Last week alone, 410 cases were reported, nearly doubling the previous week's count. Simultaneously, 171 COVID-19 cases were recorded.
This has led at least 18 hospitals to implement strict 'one visitor only' policies. But why the drastic measure?
Dr. Ilona Duffy, a GP, explains that while challenging, it's a necessary step. "If you're in the hospital, you're already vulnerable," she notes. "Adding another infection, especially the flu, could seriously jeopardize the patient's health and also put staff at risk. This is a sensible approach."
The Mater Hospital has gone a step further, urging the public to avoid its emergency department unless absolutely necessary. The hospital is under immense pressure due to the influx of flu patients. They're asking people not to visit if they have flu symptoms.
Tipperary University Hospital has adjusted its visiting hours to 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM daily. They are also requesting that visitors who are feeling unwell refrain from visiting, as they could pose a risk to patients. Children are not permitted to visit the hospital.
This is where it gets controversial... While these measures are intended to protect, they can also cause emotional strain for patients and families.
