In a significant move that could reshape their pitching roster, the San Francisco Giants have signed right-handed pitcher Adrian Houser to a lucrative two-year deal worth $22 million, which also includes a club option for the 2028 season. This announcement was made on Friday and marks Houser as the second new addition to the Giants' pitching staff within a week.
The 32-year-old Houser had an impressive performance last year, posting an 8-5 record with a commendable 3.31 earned run average (ERA) across 21 starts while playing for both the Chicago White Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays. Notably, he logged 125 innings on the mound, which ranks as the second-highest total in his nine-year career in Major League Baseball.
Earlier this week, the Giants also secured the services of right-hander Jason Foley, signing him to a one-year contract worth $2 million. The Giants are optimistic about Foley's return, expected midway through the upcoming season, following his shoulder surgery that sidelined him for most of the 2025 season.
General Manager Zack Minasian spoke about the team's strategy during a video conference, emphasizing the goal of enhancing their pitching lineup. "We’re focusing on building our pitching staff. Signing two pitchers, including Jason Foley—who has experience in high-pressure situations—and Adrian Houser, who had a standout year, aligns with our discussions from the trade deadline. Both have proven they can perform well even in challenging environments," he stated. This commitment to bolstering the pitching roster is part of the Giants' initial offseason plans, especially considering the team’s four consecutive seasons without playoff appearances.
Houser began the previous season with Texas’ Triple-A affiliate in Round Rock before making a transition to the White Sox on May 20, where he completed 11 starts before being traded to the Rays at the deadline. His career also includes stints with the Milwaukee Brewers and the New York Yankees, showcasing his versatility and experience on different teams.
As for Jason Foley, a former closer for the Detroit Tigers, he was recently designated for assignment but had previously led his team with 28 saves in 2024. After undergoing shoulder surgery in May, performed by renowned surgeon Dr. Keith Meister, Foley is reportedly recovering well. Minasian shared, "He’s feeling positive about his recovery. While we prefer not to place a specific timeline on his return, we want to ensure he takes the necessary time to heal fully without the pressure to rush back into action."
This strategic focus on refining the pitching staff suggests that the Giants are eager to turn a new page and improve their competitive standing in the coming season.
