A major recruiting ripple hit the college football world this weekend. Former Wisconsin offensive tackle commit Maddox Cochrane has switched gears, pledging his future to Virginia Tech—a move that continues the Hokies’ aggressive revamp of their offensive line under newly appointed head coach James Franklin. And here's the intriguing part: this marks the third offensive lineman to join Franklin’s class in less than two weeks. The rebuild is clearly in full swing.
The Richmond, Virginia native from Benedictine College Prep made his decision after an official campus visit this weekend—his second in as many weeks. Standing at 6-foot-7 and weighing 280 pounds, Cochrane says Virginia Tech had always been near the top of his list. "Virginia Tech was always one of my top choices," he told 247Sports. "Coach Franklin just stood out to me. He’s such a genuine guy—really easy to believe in."
Cochrane’s recruitment took an interesting turn earlier this month. He decommitted from Wisconsin on the very same day Franklin took the helm at Virginia Tech. His first unofficial visit coincided with the Hokies’ game against Miami, a trip that stirred enough excitement to bring him back only days later for a deeper, more official look. That second visit sealed the deal.
What Maddox Cochrane Sees in Virginia Tech
“There’s just this contagious energy around the program,” Cochrane said enthusiastically. “The new staff is bringing a kind of buzz that makes everyone feel part of something big.” He isn’t alone—many fans sense a fresh optimism surrounding the Hokies’ locker room this season. But is it too early to call this a full-blown resurgence under Franklin?
Who Was Recruiting Cochrane Before Virginia Tech?
Back in late April, Cochrane verbally committed to Wisconsin. At that time, several other schools—including Virginia, Rutgers, and Duke—were in strong contention. His decision to join the Badgers came largely because of his connection with offensive line coach AJ Blazek. However, as signing day neared, Cochrane began to explore other paths. Once he reopened his recruitment, Virginia Tech quickly emerged as the frontrunner, and after consecutive visits, his commitment felt more like a formality than a surprise.
How Does He Rank?
According to 247Sports, Cochrane carries an 87 rating, ranking him as the No. 83 offensive tackle nationally and the No. 22 overall player in Virginia for the 2026 class. In the composite rankings, he sits slightly higher—No. 82 at his position and No. 27 statewide. Those numbers make him a solid addition to an already promising recruiting class, particularly for a team looking to rebuild its offensive front with both size and potential.
Where He Fits in with the Hokies
Cochrane becomes the third offensive lineman to jump on board with Franklin—and interestingly, all three were once committed to Big Ten programs. He joins Roseby Lubintus from Timber Creek (New Jersey) and Marlen Bright from DePaul (New Jersey), both of whom made their Virginia Tech commitments earlier this week. They’ll line up alongside Leland (N.C.) North Brunswick’s Tyrell Simpson and Woodberry Forest (Va.) product Buddy Wegdam in what’s shaping up to be one of the most revamped and exciting offensive line groups the Hokies have seen in recent years.
But here's where things could get controversial: Is Coach Franklin betting too heavily on reclaimed Big Ten talent, or is this exactly the fresh start Virginia Tech’s offensive line has needed for years? Fans have been quick to celebrate, but some question whether quick rebuilds can lead to lasting success.
What do you think—has Virginia Tech found the right balance between experience, potential, and local recruiting power? Should programs lean harder into re-recruiting decommits, or focus on developing untouched prospects? Share your thoughts below—the debate is only getting started.
