A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has made a bold statement, rejecting the reported defection and registration of Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, at its Enugu zonal office. Led by National Chairman Nafiu Gombe, this faction claims to be the authentic national leadership of the ADC and has issued a strong statement, distancing itself from the reported defection. According to them, the exercise violated the party's constitution and established membership procedures.
Obi's defection to the ADC was announced at an event held at the Nike Lake Resort in Enugu State, where he called for a broad coalition to 'rescue Nigeria from poverty, disunity, and democratic decline'. However, the ADC faction led by Gombe has clarified that the party's membership registration process is clearly defined and does not allow for registration at zonal or national offices. They emphasize that ward-level registration is the only recognized method, and any registration outside of this process is irregular and invalid.
This statement comes a day after the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee of the Labour Party described Obi's defection as a 'liberation' for the party. The Labour Party's National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, expressed regret over the party's decision to field Obi as its presidential candidate in the 2023 election. The ADC faction's clarification aims to address misleading information and maintain the party's order, discipline, and adherence to its constitution.
