Quick Share's AirDrop Support Expands to the Google Pixel 9: A Limited Rollout
Google's Quick Share feature, which allows seamless file sharing between Android devices, has been a game-changer for Android users. In November 2025, Google made a surprising move by enabling Quick Share compatibility with Apple's AirDrop, all on its own. Since then, the feature has been exclusive to the Pixel 10 family, but Google promised to expand it to more Android devices this year. Now, the expansion is beginning with the 2025 Pixel 9 lineup, albeit on a limited scale.
Several Pixel 9 owners on Reddit report that they can now use Quick Share to AirDrop files to iPhones, Macs, or iPads. The feature appeared on their devices after installing the latest Google Play system update, followed by an update to the Quick Share extension. If you own a Pixel 9, head to Settings > System > Software updates > Google Play System update to install the latest build available. To update the Quick Share extension, tap your Google account name in the Settings menu, navigate to All services > System services > Quick Share extension, and tap install if the plugin is not already installed.
However, it's important to note that the AirDrop support on the Pixel 9 is only available for a limited rollout. Based on reports, the Quick Share extension with AirDrop compatibility is only showing up for Pixel 9 users on the Google Play system update beta channel. Even installing Android 17 Beta 1 will not guarantee access to the feature. For now, it seems Google is rolling out Quick Share-AirDrop compatibility on a limited basis to select users. My Pixel 8 Pro is running the latest Play system beta build, but AirDrop support is not live for me yet.
The company could officially bring AirDrop support to the Pixel 9 with the next big Quarterly Platform Update in March. As for other Android devices, it should only be a matter of time before the feature expands to them.
