Imagine enjoying a quiet evening at your local pub, only to have a car suddenly crash through the front, leaving chaos in its wake. That’s exactly what happened at the Royal Hotel in Capertee, a small town about 46 kilometers north of Lithgow, NSW, on a Sunday evening at 5:20 pm. But here’s where it gets even more shocking—this isn’t the first time the pub has been targeted by a vehicle. Back in July 2024, another car crashed through the front fence and into the building, though thankfully, no one was injured then. This time, however, the outcome was far more devastating.
Seven people were injured, with two sustaining serious injuries that required immediate medical attention. The victims, a 64-year-old man and a 71-year-old woman, were treated by paramedics at the scene before being airlifted to the hospital. Another woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for further treatment, while four other patrons were also injured but did not require hospitalization. And this is the part most people miss—the driver, a 30-year-old man, walked away unharmed. He was arrested and taken to Orange Base Hospital for mandatory testing, a standard procedure in such cases.
Following his release, the driver was charged with negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm and two counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm. His license was suspended, and he was denied bail, scheduled to appear before the Bail Division Court 4 the very next day. Here’s the controversial question: Could this incident have been prevented if stricter measures were in place to monitor driver behavior around public spaces?
