Bold opening: A star-studded Monte Cristo musical is headed to Off-Broadway, promising a thrilling blend of intrigue, revenge, and romance that could redefine a classic tale.
An all-star world premiere of a new musical adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’s beloved novel The Count of Monte Cristo is scheduled for 2026, directed by Peter Flynn. The York Theatre’s spring lineup will feature a run from March 12 to April 5, with opening night on March 19.
The production follows a man who is unjustly imprisoned, emerging richer, wiser, and driven by a relentless quest for vengeance. Yet as his meticulously crafted plan unfolds, the major question emerges: is justice alone enough when love enters the equation?
The show’s book and lyrics come from two-time Tony nominee Peter Kellogg, whose prior works include Anna Karenina and Desperate Measures, while the score is by Stephen Weiner, a two-time Richard Rodgers Award winner. Leading the cast is Sierra Boggess as Mercedes, Adam Jacobs as Edmund, James Judy as Danglars, Norm Lewis as Villefort, Stephanie Jae Park as Haydee, Danny Rutigliano as Caderousse/Abbe, Drama Desk winner Eliseo Román as Morrell, Daniel Yearwood as Fernand, and Tony winner Karen Ziemba as Carconte/Lucrezia Borgia. Additional casting will be announced in the coming months.
This production stems from The York Theatre’s New2NY program, reuniting the Desperate Measures team with the Penelope collaborator ensemble to bring a fresh take to this enduring tale.
Monte Cristo will feature music direction and orchestrations by David Hancock Turner, choreographing by Marcos Santana, scenic design by Anne Mundell, costume design by Zoë Sienna Allen, sound design by Joanna Lynne Staub, and lighting design by Alan E. Edwards. Casting is by Andrea Zee of Zee-Casting.
