A Serious Data Breach Shakes One of Brisbane’s Most Prestigious Schools — What You Need to Know
In a startling development that has many parents and students concerned, Somerville House, a well-respected girls' school in Brisbane, is currently under investigation following the leak of a sensitive document containing detailed notes made by teachers about students. But here's where it gets controversial: these notes included private information like students’ personalities, health diagnoses, physical appearance, and even details about their families—raising serious questions about privacy and school management.
To understand the situation fully, it’s important to recognize what happened: Teachers who tutored students in Year 7 back in 2021 had compiled a document filled with comments on students’ characteristics. These comments ranged from casual observations, such as hair condition and social popularity, to more subjective judgments labeling some students as "odd" or "rude." The document also detailed how students responded to certain subjects and assessments, their classroom behaviors, as well as personal medical information—covering diagnoses, medical care, and medications they might have been taking.
Additionally, the notes included sensitive personal data about students’ families, such as their parents’ marital status, with some descriptions being labeled as "intense" based on their involvement in their child's education. Shockingly, students reportedly gained access to this confidential file after they accidentally found it while browsing files uploaded by a teacher on Microsoft Teams.
This exposure has come at a particularly sensitive time, just before Year 11 exam preparations are due to begin, adding layers of stress to an already tense period. Late last night, school principal Sandra Hastie sent a letter to parents, describing the situation as a "data breach within our school IT system". While she acknowledged that some students had viewed the private notes, she stopped short of issuing a formal apology.
In her message, Dr. Hastie detailed the school’s active investigation into how the breach happened and emphasized that they would handle the matter in accordance with legal requirements. The letter indicated that the school would keep families informed about any developments and any actions taken to address the breach.
Unsurprisingly, worried parents voiced their concerns directly to the principal, criticizing the nature of the teacher comments and questioning how such information was stored and protected. As of now, Somerville House has declined to respond to inquiries from the media, including the ABC.
Founded in 1899, this institution holds a unique place as the only preparatory through to Year 12 school within the Presbyterian and Methodist Schools Association in Brisbane, offering both day and boarding options. The costs are significant, with tuition starting at approximately $23,300 for preparatory year and reaching up to $30,144 annually for senior students.
